Re living conditions - it really all depends on who you wind up working for and what you like to do in the park. There is a free wellness center (for park employees and volunteers only) with weight room, cardio machines, space for yoga/etc classes, and they also have wireless internet, a few wired desktops for communal use, and a DVD checkout system. (The Village grocery store has decent prices on fresh fruits/vegetables and you-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it-high prices on everything else.) DNC also has a little community center and there are barbecues/cookouts/potlucks all the time, plus they run occasional buses down to Fresno or Merced if you want to do a grocery run without paying for your own gas (hella expensive in CA, btw). Or, you can buy your own food and use shared kitchens to prepare it. There are also dorm-style rooms, portables (trailers), and some rather nice apartments, but returning employees get first pick of housing, so your first year you just wind up with whatever's left ) You get a 10% off card for groceries (not alcohol) and 50% off most fast food, and there are meal plans you can buy into (last year's was $45 for 21 meals per week, which just gets deducted automatically from your paycheck). Most first-year positions in the Valley for DNC come with a shared canvas tent cabin with super-cheap rent (I think they were $17/week last year). Keep in mind that different areas also have different seasons - for example, the Tuolumne Meadows Grill doesn't open until the Tioga Road has been open for a couple of weeks, which means it could open late May or not until July.Įxpenses depend on your living situation. If you are hoping to do a lot of recreation in the park, you will want to research the different areas of the park and figure out which areas you want to be closest to, then concentrate your efforts there. Depending on what your recreation interests in the park are and/or if you will have a car, those might be good options for you if DNC doesn't work out. (There is also the Tioga Pass Resort just outside the east entrance, but that has a very short season since it depends on the pass being open). There are also a variety of hospitality positions just outside the park the Yosemite View Lodge, Cedar Lodge, and Yosemite Bug Hostel in El Portal/Midpines all have restaurants/kitchens, there is the Evergreen Lodge toward the north of the park which also has kitchens, and DNC also runs Tenaya Lodge, which is a large resort just outside the south entrance of the park. if you can start work in April and/or continue working into September/October) your opportunities are better. If you can work longer than the "college summer" (e.g. You can read more about their employment opportunities here: I don't think they've begun hiring for the summer season yet, but that should start soon. Those are all run by the park's contracted concessioner, Delaware North Company (DNC). Many of us in this sub either currently live/work in the park or have done so in the past, so there are some different perspectives in those threads.Īs to your specific work area, you should be able to get a job in one of the kitchens (Ahwahnee, Curry Village, Yosemite Lodge, Degnans Deli, Tuolumne Meadows Grill, Wawona, etc.). Hi - this question, or variants on it, gets asked quite a bit, so I'm going to link you to some past threads for general info (one of these days I am going to round up a FAQ for this sub):
